Role of Technology for a Remote Workplace

Role of Technology for a Remote Workplace

As technology evolves to bring more innovation into offices around the world, the concept of ‘workplace’ slightly changes each time, making work easier and more effective. So let us learn the role of technology for remote work.

Remote work as we know it wasn’t even a possibility back in the day because the technology didn’t exist. There was a time when colleagues and business partners couldn’t get in touch if someone was out of the office, there was no email, text, or direct message. They would have needed to provide an alternative phone number or a pager number to have a work-related conversation.

We must thank the advancement in technology, which changed the traditional way of work. Even full-time “remote” positions were different from what they are today. So now work is accomplished with no constraints of an office desk or a time zone.

Technology Tools to Succeed at Remote Work

Let us understand the role of technology for remote work with tools that makes it a success.

1. Internet

5G is one of those promising developments that should scale up the flexibility of working with a smartphone or laptop from any location. Its predecessor 4G has already done a decent job at this, but it leaves a lot to be desired. 5G is the next generation of mobile technology that promises to increase data speeds and lower latencies on network response times, the two main factors to more immersive experiences. Reliable and speedy connectivity is critical to reliance on remote working where remarkably higher throughput, lower latency, and greater mobility rival fixed broadband, all for the sake of better business communication.

2. Hardware/Devices

Tech gadgets these days like easily portable laptops, mobile workstations, smartphones, wireless keyboards, earphones, mouse – allow remote workers to keep the same pace at work, while being on the move. One no longer has to worry about battery life for long periods of time. The huge advancement in tech devices allow for one to work from anywhere, as long as they have good wi-fi. These devices are fast, efficient, and super reliable.

3. Collaboration and Communication Tools

Collaboration and communication technology these days allow for teams to work together like they would in an actual office. Video conferencing, file-sharing platforms, time-tracking tools, and project management programs allow people to work from home, shared spaces, cafes, or other locations outside of the office.

VR Virtual Reality

A more progressive and futuristic tool for remote working is – Virtual Reality (VR). It turns the idea of working remotely into a more valuable and more personal experience.

A virtual business meeting is a perfect example of taking things to the next level. Participants could have a wide array of information at their disposal, like relevant notes and action items being pulled up on the screen, along with each other’s business and social media credentials easily formed and distributed. They could perform actions like drawing on a virtual whiteboard for a classic presentation feel while the software automatically schedules follow-up meetings based on synced participants’ calendars and ongoing meeting discussions – the list goes on.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) will also likely play a major role in managing remote staff. VR is still far from mainstream use, especially outside the enterprise levels. However, there is no shortage of new technologies that amplify out-of-office working, particularly working on the move.

4. Cybersecurity Tools

Secure data access is often swept under the rug in discussing the remote workforce. The truth is that remote work opportunities cannot exist without securing internally sensitive information. Especially in services industries and management-level employee classifications, the data being handled is proprietary and requires mutual trust between employees and the employer”, says Zachary Chertok, lead human capital management research analyst at the Aberdeen Group.

Data privacy as we know is a huge priority these days, and rightly so. Having tools like virtual private networks, dedicated secure networks, electronic signing, password locked documents, timestamps and secure messaging make it easier from a compliance perspective.

The Advantages of Technology for a Remote Workplace

All of the technological advancements mentioned above allow for a seamless remote working experience regardless of location or time zone. So the role of technology that supports remote work are as follows:

Speed

We all understand that time is money. Technology has allowed us to have access to information that we need with a click of a button. While working remotely, if one can reserve a space at a cafe or a shared space and make a payment in 2 clicks, they can focus on prioritizing the rest of the time on the work that needs to get done. So the role of technology has made the cycle of work faster and remotely possible

Productivity

Managers are beginning to realize something pertinent: brains and bodies function better when they have more to do in less time. Research shows that people who work 35 hours per week are half as productive as those who only work 20. Companies are now considering 4-hour workdays. So technology plays a vital role for remote workers increase their productivity.

Flexibility

Working from a different location and time zone is not a concern as long as one is able to deliver work outcomes on time. Technology makes flexibility a possibility. So anyone now can choose to work remotely while also being productive

Experience

As we move into our ‘new normal’, organizations are figuring out how to create remote workplace experiences with technology. The current technological advancements have allowed us to collaborate, communicate, and work remotely. We believe future technology like 5G and Virtual Reality will enhance the future of remote work experience.

Community

Technology enables people to come together despite the distance. Here anyone can be part of a community regardless of where they are based. As organizations and working professionals figure their way through this new way of working, it is comforting to be able to have access to and be a part of a community virtually. This can not only make remote working easier but also more fun and exciting!

Conclusion:

The role of technology has made the global workforce stay connected in remote work culture. Since 2005, the regular work-at-home population has grown 159% and is still trending up. The situation we are in right now is only confirming that the investment employers are making in technology right now won’t be wasted as most people feel productive while working remotely and believe that the workforce will move more in this direction after.

Remote working has become an accepted practice in many offices globally because of the advances in communication technology, collaboration tools, and internet access. Today, remote work isn’t done entirely from home. Remote workers turn to cafes or co-working spaces, and some even travel the world while maintaining their career goals.

Remote work has shown it positively contributes when it comes to employee productivity and engagement. But it affects various other workplace aspects like creativity, employee retention, costs, diversity – all for the better. By embracing solutions to make the remote workforce deliver their best work and be easier to manage. Businesses can raise its workforce’s effectiveness to new levels and streamline the organization’s performance. Today, it’s easier than ever to work remotely and as ever, technology helps.
